December 2004 News --Dawn Thompson has some great news to share! Her Paranormal Historical, THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE, has placed first in the Red River Romance Writer's "Ticket to Write" contest. Chris Keeslar, the final round judge, requested the full, and when she got the "CALL", couldn't announce it until the official contest winner list was posted. He made her an offer, and she accepted, so Dorchester is going to be publishing the book in Sept. or Oct. of 2005! And, she gets to keep her title!! Yipppeeeee! --Pam Burford and her sister Pat Ryan will be teaching a four-hour course on "Writing the Commercial Novel" on April 9 at Writers & Books, Rochester's literary center. Pam is about halfway through her first mainstream novel (another decade or so and it should be done!); Pat writes the Nell Sweeney historical mystery series for Berkley's Prime Crime imprint. --Barbara Metzger's February book, THE DUEL, (Signet Eclipse, Regency-set Historical) is a Romantic Times Top Pick. Congratulations Barbara! --Roberta Gellis has given me permission to warn LIRW members that there will be a surfeit of Gellis in the first quarter of 2005. In February, the mass market version of THIS SCEPTER'D ISLE will be published. Also in February, DESIREE, the first historical romance she's written in about ten years will be published in mass market size by Harlequin Signature Select. And in March, there will a new historical fantasy about Queen Elizabeth I when she was a teenager. ILL MET BY MOONLIGHT will be published by Baen Books in hardcover. The first two books of the series had no romance in them at all, but this one will. If you aren't sure you will like historical fantasy, ask your library to buy it or interloan it for you. --Marilyn Levinson's updated Scholastic book club edition of NO BOYS ALLOWED comes out in January and the new cover looks great! --Dawn Thompson's Historical Paranormal, THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE, has finalled in the Red River Romance Writers "Ticket to Write" contest, and the Charter Oak "Oak Leaf Award of Excellence" contest. Literary Agents Jenny Bent, and Deidre Knight have both requested partials, and Susan McCarty of Berkley, who requested the full when it won the "Haunted Hearts" contest last summer has recommended it to the senior editors, who are reading it now. --Jen McAndrews has news! Her chick lit mystery "Deadly Farce" is a finalist in the RWA Chick Lit Writers "Get Your Stiletto in the

October & November 2004 --Lori Avocato's humorous mystery novel, A Dose of Murder, is now available. --Barbara Gale just sold a Silhouette Special Edition to Harlequin entitled The Emissary, to be released March 2006. "Picking Up the Pieces" will be released March 2005. --Trish Hubschman got a letter from Dorchester Media. True Confessions is buying her short story REGAINING SIGHT. It's scheduled to be in their January 5th 2005 issue. --Dawn Thompson just learned that her historical paranormal, THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE, has finalled in the "spooky" category of the Smoky Mountain Romance Wrtiers "Sweet, Spicy & Spooky" contest. The winners will be announced on Christmas Day. September 2004 -- Lori Avocato just found out that her book, A Dose of Murder, is in it's second printing...and the book doesn't even get released until Sept. 28. --Bertrice Small's October Outing will be held on Saturday, October 23rd. We're doing the Southold Historical Society, and do remember that Southold is the oldest English speaking community in the state of NY, plus the new Rafael Winery. It's built like a 15th century
Tuscan monastery. And our last stop will be Krupski's Pumpkin Farm. Lunch on your most faithful author is included. She's still deciding that destination. We'll meet at the Moore house on Main Road in the village at 11 a.m.
--Edith Layton reports that THE RETURN OF TH EARL, comes out from AVON Books on September First! THE TWO DANCING DAUGHTERS in Signet's REGENCY CHRISTMAS MAGIC, comes out October 5. --Pam Burford taught a four-hour romance-writing class at Writers & Books, Rochester's literary center, on Aug. 21. She's been asked to return during the winter session to teach again (maybe a novel-writing class with the Good Twin). The Evil Twin and Good Twin were given a combined 100th birthday party the same day. As their dad used to say, they are now half a goddamned century old. Now that the class is over, Pam can resume work on her first mainstream book. --Dawn Thompson reports that The Farris Agency has requested a partial of my Haunted Heart winner, THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE. August 2004 --Dawn Thompson's non-traditional Regency, THE PRIVATEER, won honorable mention in the Beau Monde's Royal Ascot contest. The prizes were announced at National. :-) --Bertrice Small is finishing up LARA, her first book in The World of Hetar series for HQN. And NAL is so tickled with PRIVATE PLEASURES they want another erotic contemporary and more historicals. I keep trying to slow
down, but no one wants to let me. Thank heavens!
--Barbara Metzger is happy to report that her last Regency, THE DIAMOND KEY, (Signet, 2003) won the 2004 Madcap Award for Best Historical Romantic Comedy. --Roberta Gellis is happy to report that her new soft science
fiction book, OVERSTARS MAIL: IMPERIAL CHALLENGE will be published in August by Five Star. It will be a hardcover, but she hopes the members of LIRW will ask their local library to buy it. It's a real fun book. Details are available on her website: http://www.robertagellis.com/. --Shirley Hailstock has been notified by Affaire de Coeur Magazine that her Silhouette Special Edition, A FATHER'S FORTUNE, is the winner in the Affaire de Coeur Reader/Writer poll in the category of Best Contemporary Novel With Hero and/or Heroine of Color." July 2004 --NAL has sold PHILIPPA, Bertrice Small's October trade book to Bookspan, and PRIVATE PLEASURES,
her July erotic novel to J'ai Lui in France. --Roberta Gellis has finished DESIREE, a new book in the Roselynde Chronicles, and sent it off to Harlequin.
Sadly,she expects it will need major revisions because
the book ran about 20,000 words too long. --Dawn Thompson just learned that her Regency-set gothic historical, THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE, has tied for first place in Gothrom's "Haunted Hearts" contest. It also won the Haunted Hearts Gold Pendant Award for best of contest, and the final round judge, Susan McCarthy of Berkley, has requested to see the full manuscript.
At the luncheon, Serena Jones of NAL requested a partial of THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE, and Paige Wheeler of Creative Media requested partials of all three of her historicals that have won awards this year--THE MARSH HAWK, THE PRIVATEER, AND THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE. --Trish Hubschman is scheduled to have cochlear implant surgery at NYU in NYC on September 8th, 2004. She gets activated 4 weeks later. --Liz Slawinski won second place in the Dixie First Chapter contest with her romantic suspense IN TOO DEEP. June 2004 --Dawn Thompson just finalled in Gothrom's "Haunted Hearts" contest with her Gothic Historical, THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE. Also, Hilliard & Harris has requested a full of THE MARSH HAWK. It never stops!! She just got a call from the Beau Monde. Her non-traditional Regency, THE PRIVATEER has finalled in the Royal Ascot contest! --George Jehn has one item to report (finally). Beginning approximately June 1, he'll be doing a fishing report on the new Plum TV station, which will begin airing on Cable Channel 18 on the South Fork of Long Island from West Hampton to Montauk. The show will have a viewing audience of approximately 1.3 million people. He also hopes to have some news on his book in the near future. --Trish Hubschman reports that her article MY EYES is being published in the Braille Monitor (magazine of the National Federation of the Blind). Her picture's going to be in there too. --Pam Burford joined the Good Twin Pat Ryan at Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Awards in April. It was a blast, replete with VIP presenters such as Michael Connelly and Joseph Wambaugh. Pam made some good contacts during the preceding cocktail party. --Lori Avocato's contemporary romance, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, placed Third in the Wisconsin's RWA's Write touch contest. --Barbara Gale reports that her next book, Althea's Chance, has been renamed Picking Up the Pieces, a SSE due out 3/05. May 2004 --Barbara Gale's latest news is that she submitted the final draft of her next Silhouette Special Edition release, ALTHEA'S CHANCE, to Silhouette. Then she cleaned her house... --Lori Pepio will be appearing at Side Street Books in Patchogue for a booksigning/ talk on Sunday, May 23rd between 1 and 3 PM. Final round judge is Kim Nadelson of Harlequin Intrigue, and results will be announced in July. --Mercury finally coming out of retrograde on April 30th - it's been there since April 6th - Bertrice Small is now back to work on her first effort for Harlequin's HQN Books. No title yet. April 2004 --Barbara Bretton is a RITA finalist! with her book SHORE LIGHTS in the Best Novel with Strong Romantic Elements category. CONGRATULATIONS!!
Barbara also won a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for Contemporary Romance. --Roberta Gellis also received an RT Lifetime Achievement Award for her classic series, THE ROSALYNDE CHRONICLES. --Shirley Hailstock's first Silhouette novel, "A Father's Fortune" is a finalist in the Beacon Contest. --Edith Layton won an RT Career Achievement Award for British Isle Historical Romance. --Lori Pepio will be appearing at Side Street Books in Patchogue for a booksigning/ talk on Sunday, May 23rd between 1 and 3 PM. --BOOKLIST Magazine named Barbara Metzger's WEDDED BLISS as one of the top 10 romances of the year!
--Bertrice Small has delivered her first book to Harlequin's HQN line. Titled LARA it is currently scheduled for June 2005.
--Barbara Metzger's Regency THE DIAMOND KEY, has been named a finalist in the Madcap Award, historical category, and in The National Readers' Choice Awards for Best Regency. And she has signed a new three book contract with Signet for a Regency-set historical trilogy.
--Lori Avocato just learned that her female fighter pilot romance, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, is a finalist in the Wisconsin RWA Write Touch contest. Lori also just returned from Disney World where she met John Stamos (Jesse on Full House). Lori, not being shy, gave him her business card and said he'd be perfect in the role of "Jagger," the hero in her October release, A DOSE OF MURDER. He was very nice and said to have her agent send a copy to his agent! Hey, Lori loves a long shot.
